The MHRA issued a ‘National Patient Safety Alert’ in August 2023, following continued reports of deaths and serious injuries from entrapment or falls relating to medical beds, bed rails, trolleys, bariatric beds, lateral turning devices and bed grab handles.

Provide training for staff who are involved in assessing needs and risk assessments for bed rails and other equipment.
Deadline: 31 August 2024

Implement maintenance and servicing programme for all devices, which includes profiling care beds, and prioritise older non-maintained equipment.
Deadline: 1 March 2024

Update policies and procedures for provision, prescribing and maintenance of these devices, equipment inventory records and review/assessment of residents.
